PARTON IN THE MANOR COURT
1703-1714
Item D/LONS/W8/13/1 in the Carlisle Record Office is the court book of the former Fletcher manors at Moresby & Distington, with entries from 1703 to 1938 (but many gaps). These transcripts, abstracts and notes relate only to significant Parton entries from 1703 to 1714, at which time Thomas Fletcher Esq. was Lord of the Manor (there is an unexplained gap from 1714 to the first entry of a new Lord, John Brougham Esq., in 1735). Nearly all the early courts were held at Parton, but unfortunately the precise venue is not named.
1 Apr 1703: [probable first court of Thomas Fletcher after death of his father]
Begins with list of names, presumably property owners (freeholders) subject to the jurisdiction of the court, as in later lists given here. In Parton only these: Robert Watters, John Wilkinson, John Moses & wife Elianor, Brian Charnley.
At this court, John Moses was appointed bailiff for Moresby manor.

Another mis-bound freeholders' list seems to be from this court; Parton entries are: Joseph Sewell gent., John Cowman, John Threlkeld, William Graham, Thomas Gaitskell, Peter Senhouse gent., John Harrison, Bryan Charnley & wife Jane, Robert Richardson, Joseph Steell, Robert Beeby, William Lowry & wife ?Joanne, John Drape, Anthony Fisher, Nicholas Baxter, John Pyper & wife Dorothy, Edward Smith, Thomas Hartley, Richard Brickell gent. & wife Jane, Henry Walker, Richard Walker, Thomas Walker, Anthony Walker, William Atkinson, John Mathews, Robert Watters, John Moses & wife Elianor, Robert Richardson, Christopher Grayson, John Robinson, James Lowther Esq., Nathaniel Lowes & wife Martha, Nathaniel Lowes, Peter Walker & wife Jane, Jacob Sunton, Joseph Benn gent., William Mackdonnell & wife Anne, William Bowman, Nathaniel Dixon & wife Lydia, Judith wife of William Tate, John Bowman senior & junior, Anthony Whiteside, Peter Walker, Richard Parrott, Henry Pyper [dead], Richard Sanderson, John Wilkinson, Joseph Pearson, Anthony Lawrence, Jonathan Cowman & wife Mary, Thomas Drape, John & Matthew Pyper, Anthony Dixon, Matthew Cowman, Thomas Lamplugh Esq.
27 Oct 1711: "We find that the persons undermentioned have not sufficiently paved the streets in Parton"... [ordered to pave in front of their premises as above by 24 June next, penalty 10s- list of 31 tenants]
"Wee alsoe find that Dorothy Pyper, widw. has encroached upon the highway in the streets of Parton aforesd. by a wall builded in the same, and we order that she remove the sd. wall & make the sd. way sufficient before the 24th day of June next on pain of 10s."
21 April 1713: The inhabitants of Parton are to be responsible for repairing the highways between Anthony Whiteside's house in Parton and Cow Gapp (Moresby Hall loaning head), and between John Harrison's house in Parton & Richard Sand's gate at the Whitehaven border.
Also lists 18 tenants who have still not paved the street in front of their premises; they must pay the 10s fine and do the work by June 24 next.
14 April 1714: 11 freeholders still haven't paved- to do so by 24 June or be fined 10s.
